A Great Solution to the Wrong Problem.

How I helped Syncrasy revolutionise how Luxury brands build their relationships with their most important customers.

When Remembering Is Worth a Fortune

In luxury, a single relationship can be worth a huge amount. Hotels, private aviation, high-end cars and luxury brands all depend on knowing their high and ultra-high net worth clients personally: what they own, what they care about, and what they talked about last time.

Adam Hebditch who spent years at Rolls-Royce, alongside Syncrasy's investors saw the same problem across the industry.

Brands couldn't hold on to those personal details across their teams, and it was costing them sales. So he teamed up with two very talented engineers and started building Syncrasy.

Spinning off

Spinning off
the track

I was brought in by one of those engineers, whom I'd worked with before. The team had built a genuinely good CRM, but it felt like it was going nowhere. They knew there was something there, but they couldn't see how it would fit inside a real organisation.

The trouble was that the tool had been built in isolation, with no reference to how people actually work day to day. It was a really good solution to the wrong problem.

Strip It Back and Go Where People Already Are

Strip It Back and Go Where People Already Are

I got what the team had built in front of the people who'd already said they wanted a solution. The first thing they told us was that it was a nice concept, but it had to work with the systems they already used.

Those systems were mostly HubSpot and Salesforce. Salesforce is notoriously hard to build for, because every company sets it up differently. HubSpot is much more consistent, so I suggested we strip everything back and get a solid HubSpot integration working first, then build Syncrasy's value on top of it. That one decision changed who we could talk to, who we could sell to, and what the team worked on each day.

I also changed how the team worked. These were senior engineers who were perfectly capable of solving problems, but they'd been handed tasks without much clarity. We stopped writing tickets that spelled out the solution. Instead, we started from the problem, talked it through together, and logged rough solution ideas in Linear. Everyone got to shape the answer, and the whole project ran more smoothly as a result.

In one workshop, we mapped the entire infrastructure from start to finish: what each part does, how the parts connect, and what everything costs. Both engineers had worked at big tech companies and had never done that exercise before. It took a couple of hours and gave everyone, including an investor, a shared picture of the whole system.

Product design is not linear.
It's cyclical and iterative.
At every stage, the product development can move back a step and change to make the final outcome better.

Walking Mayfair

Walking Mayfair

The product was ready for real conversations, so I went out and had them.

I walked around Mayfair, cold-calling on the boutiques and offices of luxury brands and meeting the people who own them and the people who work on the shop floor. I asked how they remember their best clients, what gets lost between teams, and what it costs them when a relationship goes cold. Those conversations sharpened the product, built real relationships, and led to multiple partnerships.

    Gabriel Neves

    Staff Designer @ LegalZoom

"To get the obvious out of the way; Jon is in many ways a quintessential digital product designer and is always a passionate advocate for the end user. But what he brings that is uniquely Jon is enthusiasm; not just for the role (of which there is plenty), but also for the environment and the relationships that surround the role. It isn't enough to be good at the job, but he must also try and ensure the people he's working with are, and the environment they're working in is, comfortable and creative."

    Bob Ferry

    Design Systems Lead - Quinyx

"I really enjoyed working with Jon, I've learnt a lot from him, and would truly recommend him as a skilful product designer and a great team player. He always puts a great effort into clarifying both the user and business needs and objectives, and makes sure to get alignment across the project team. "
